If you can say the words, "I can't sing," your voice is working!

Singing is a skill that most people can acquire with practice, and I enjoy adapting lessons to any and all skill levels. I myself am often amazed as I hear a student's voice emerge.

I teach anyone who has finished at least 1st grade and has strong reading skills.

How to Practice

Practice 5-6 days per week even if it’s only for 5 minutes.

Consistency, more than length of practice, builds neural pathways.

Gather your materials and read your lesson notes.

1. Exercises.

Stretching, breathing, warm-up, scales, drills, games, sight reading, work pages, etc.

2. Song.

An easy way to get better at a song is to repeat a small part of it many times slowly, making it better before moving on to another part. It helps to mark off the section with sticky notes.

3. Analysis.

Take some time to understand your song better.

Ask yourself questions about it and write the answers in your music.

Questions such as

  • What do the words mean?
  • Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
  • What do I want my listeners to think about, feel, or do?
  • What will help or hinder that goal?
  • What key is it in? Or, which note sounds like “1”?
  • How many beats per measure?
  • What sections are similar, somewhat different, or completely different?
  • What volume should each part be?

And others like these.
